I am grateful for.....

Happy Thanksgiving from Imagine Fit!

Hi!  Just wanted to drop a quick note!
 HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

AND share some fun facts!
Check out some interesting Thanksgiving facts, traditions and other bits of information relating to the history of Thanksgiving.
  • The traditional cornucopia was a curved goat's horn filled to brim with fruits and grains. According to Greek legend, Amalthea (a goat) broke one of her horns and offered it to Greek God Zeus as a sign of reverence. As a sign of gratitude, Zeus later set the goat's image in the sky also known as constellation Capricorn. Cornucopia is the most common symbol of a harvest festival. A Horn shaped container, it is filled with abundance of the Earth's harvest. It is also known as the 'horn of plenty’.
  • It was not until 1941, that congress declared Thanksgiving as a national holiday. It was declared to be the fourth Thursday in November.
  • The first known thanksgiving feast or festival in North America was celebrated by Francisco Vásquez de Coronado and the people he called "Tejas" (members of the Hasinai group of Caddo-speaking Native Americans).
  • Here's one of those funny Thanksgiving facts: Turkeys have heart attacks. When the Air Force was conducting test runs and breaking the sound barrier, fields of turkeys would drop dead.
  • Turducken, a turkey stuffed with a duck stuffed with a chicken, is becoming more popular in Thanksgiving (originated in Louisiana). A turducken is a de-boned turkey stuffed with a de-boned duck, which itself is stuffed with a small de-boned chicken. The cavity of the chicken and the rest of the gaps are filled with, at the very least, a highly seasoned breadcrumb mixture (although some versions have a different stuffing for each bird).
  • 91% of Americans eat turkey on Thanksgiving Day.
For more check out this site!  AND have an
amazingly blessed Thanksgiving!

Start a gratitude journal this Jan 1st...make it a priority to write something everyday day you are grateful for, and then read through it next Thanksgiving.  It will seriously change your life!

This Thanksgiving I am grateful for all of you.  Grateful that you take the time to read what I post and open my emails and support my business.  I am grateful for the health and prosperity of my sons as they have grown this year.  I am grateful for the continued health of my husband as we navigate the medical stuff. I am grateful I am done with school and graduated!  I am grateful that I have the time to spend with family and friends to brighten my days!

SUGAR - Oh let's Count the ways #2

So you have heard it said...sugar is bad for you!!
While I totally agree and have seen some of the damage it can cause in my own health...let's examine some ways it can ruin your health!

#2 - SUGAR can SUPPRESS, the Immune System!  HOW???

We have heard that Sugar promotes inflammation.
Is that a bad thing? Well...
Inflammation, which is part of the immune response, is not always a bad thing.
But eating sugary foods can promote an overabundant
 inappropriate inflammation response that serves
 NO USEFUL PURPOSE.
AND sugar may actually promote aging
and sometimes disease.

Sugar suppresses the release of human growth hormone.
Although the effects can be dramatic, hormone treatments are expensive and risky.
So I don’t personally want to have to resort to
Hormone Treatments to look younger!
BUT to slow down the aging process,
you can definitely do what you can
to protect and naturally enhance your body’s production of human growth hormone.

Avoiding foods that are high in sugar !
Exercising, healthy eating, and
 avoiding undue stress also help.

.
Sugar raises insulin levels and promotes glycation
An influx of sugar into your body will have a fairly predictable result:

Your blood sugar levels will zoom up.

Shortly after, your pancreas will release a bunch of insulin.
This helps to clear the sugar and try to use it for energy .
But when you eat a lot of sugar, you’re constantly calling for insulin, and that can backfire in a couple of ways. Ever hear of insulin dependent Diabetes?

Read Labels...avoid the HIGH sugar content treats!
Do you have a difficult time doing that...call me!

SUGAR....oh lets count the way!

So you have heard it said...sugar is bad for you!! While I totally agree and have seen some of the damage it can cause in my own health...let's examine some ways it can ruin your health!

#1 -  Sugar can contribute to depression!  WOW you say..."REALLY"  I thought sugar made you feel good!  Get hyper and get excited and have that sugar buzz? We all know you don't give a child too much sugar...right?

I found something about that.... “Food for the Brain” that offers this explanation..simple right?

Eating lots of sugar is going to give you sudden peaks and troughs in the amount of glucose in your blood; symptoms of this going on include fatigue, irritability, dizziness, insomnia, excessive sweating (especially at night), poor concentration and forgetfulness, excessive thirst, depression and crying spells, digestive disturbances and blurred vision.

Since the brain depends on an even supply of glucose it is no surprise to find that sugar has been implicated in aggressive behavior, anxiety, and depression, and fatigue.
Lots of refined sugar and refined carbohydrates (meaning white bread, pasta, rice and most processed foods,) is also linked with depression because these foods not only supply very little in the way of nutrients but they also use up the mood enhancing B vitamins; turning each teaspoon of sugar into energy needs B vitamins. In fact, a study of 3,456 middle-aged civil servants, published in British Journal of Psychiatry found that those who had a diet which contained a lot of processed foods had a 58% increased risk for depression, whereas those whose diet could be described as containing more whole foods had a 26% reduced risk for depression.
Sugar also diverts the supply of another nutrient involved in mood – chromium.
This mineral is vital for keeping your blood sugar level stable because insulin, which clears glucose from the blood, can’t work properly without it.

SO NOW WHAT?  Can we break this sugar addiction in our lives, in our families lives?  What are some steps you can take to get this monkey off your back?

Here's one step...READ LABELS!  Look at the many forms of sugar in the processed foods you buy. Did you know that the average person consumes about 1/4 lb of "ADDED" sugar daily? BUT, but I don't drink soda, I don't eat candy..I am not doing that!  Really....look at the labels on may of the foods you buy in a box...is the ratio of CARBOHYDRATES to SUGAR more than 20%...where is the "sugar"  - the label doesn't say sugar!

So does it say Dextrose, Maltodextrin, Fructose, barley malt, sucrose, molasses????? and oh my - what about the ever present High Fructose Corn Syrup!  Just add the sugars up!

OK so all I had was a Protein Bar...here's one of my favorites...NOT!  Check out the sugar...and once you adjust the total carbs by subtracting the fiber...it becomes 19 Total Carbs, 14 of them from sugars...

TUNE in for more SUGAR BUSTER FACTS later!  And if you have any questions or would like to bust that habit...call me or shoot me a message.

WHY DID I BUY THIS?

So I got that question this week?  Or rather that comment...
I do hear things along this line often...
So first you have to really think about why you bought that! Was it a mind connection to an emotion?
A throwback to your Girl Scout years
and your love of "Thin Mints"
And if you immediately question your choice..
thinking I should not drink this...
here's a short reason why!

A little research from a temptation today! Let's start with -
it is 2 servings...most people drink the whole thing...
so in your mind double the calories and sugar...so that would be 48 gm of sugar = 12 teaspoons of sugar.

 And what is
"processed with alkali"
Processing chocolate with alkali is known as the
 "Dutch method."
Take note: any chocolate product labeled "Dutch chocolate" is not making reference to the cocoa beans' origin, but rather to this very processing technique!
The purpose of treating cocoa with an alkalizing agent?
To remove its bitter taste and infuse it with a
darker and more uniform color.
The trade-off?
Cocoa beans processed with alkali
 loses the flavonoids and antioxidants
found in raw cocoa nibs or
very dark chocolate (think 85% cocoa).

So see how very important it is to read labels and
 know your ingredients...
can a little flavored milk hurt...you tell me
Is it worth the immediate pleasure?
Or are you ready to walk at a moderate pace for 1 hr...
YES -  1 hr to work that sugar off!

Great decisions are the basis of health!
 Can't wait to share more!

IS THIS ANY GOOD?

SO I get these questions all the time.  How long does it last?  Is this any good after the "Use By" date? What exactly is a "Sell By" date?  Well I thought it was time to discuss!  And clear this up...we throw away way to much food due to the confusion!

"Use By" date - this is determined by a manufacturer, it is the last day for guaranteed producer's peak quality.  BUT that does not mean is is no good to use...it is normally OK for a few days.

"Sell by" date - this date is merely dealing with shelf life!  What is the last day a store should display a product.   Foods are still safe to eat several days after this date.

"Expiration" date - this is the ONLY date that truly means...throw it out!  This is related to "food safety".  Don't take a chance...get rid of it!

and then there's...

"Best if Used By" - this means the product will be the freshest by then and will have the best taste and texture...again doesn't mean it is bad, but it could be!

SO common sense rules...if it smells, slimy, changes to a suspicious color...toss it in the trash!

" How long does it last?"  Check it out...one I always get asked about..

EGGS - 3-5 weeks after purchase!

FRESH MEAT/ FRESH FISH - 1-2 days after purchase ( unless frozen)

NOT SURPRISING - packaged foods and canned goods - usually indefinitely...but always check...gee..
see why I don't recommend that!

What does it do in our bodies if it is "safe" for a long, long time?  I believe that has been one of the biggest contributors to the "health" state of many of us!
I know switching to fresh food and eliminating boxes
changed my life!

Lots of other great storage tips....just ask me!

BREAKING NEWS - IT'S A WRAP!

 FLC Syndrome!
You have heard of the CRS Disease...my husband claims he has that.  Well, I believe so many of also have the FLC Syndrome....Feel- Like- Crap Syndrome!

Here are some of the testimonials from the first one!

" Hi everyone. I was pretty skeptical about this plan at first but needed to loose weight desperately and quickly. So I gave it a try. For me, emotions were the hardest part. (Just part of the detox program). Hang in there. I really didn't think my body had changed much since I started except for loosing 9# and 5". I have had one hip replacement and two knee replacements all with in one year. I use a cane because of a wobble from the hip surgery. I am having the other hip replaced in June. Couldn't go anywhere without my cane lately. Not even in the house. Last night(day 10 of the detox) I got up out of my chair and walked all around without my cane. The wobble was so much better. Then I pulled my leg across the knee to put shoes and socks on. I did it! In fact my heal reached the top of my leg. Haven't been able to do this since December. I thought I was dreaming or it was just a fluke. It isn't. Still feeling a lot less painful and more steady today. Will watch carefully over the next couple of weeks while adding foods back in to see what caused all the inflammation. Stay with the program and eat according to the plan. It's all worth it." ( and her bonus - about 10#'s removed!)

"Good morning. Just returned from my weekly weigh i at WW. I knew I would lose much with being heavier, I usually do when I"m back on track but 9.6 pounds lost? YAAA MEEE! Funny part though is the lecturer told me to go out and enjoy the day, eat something I haven't this week. No, Yes, I want to lose weight but I"m doing this for my health. I'm trying to think of food as my medicine instead of all the meds. I'm taking. I want off of them and to enjoy my life with less aches and pains. As for by BS this morning Cheryl, it was 83. That's after a day of 50% less of one of my meds. Double YAAAA MEEEE! Now, off to Pitts with me to Car shop and a trip to Whole Foods and Costco's. I'll check in later. Everyone have a great day."

QUINOA? WHAT IS IT?

Recently I had a discussion with someone looking at protein sources.  She was wanting to improve her nutrition and adding additional protein to support her weight loss.  Is more protein really effective? Is there a reason to increase it for support in weight management?

An interesting article that I think explains this well states " since our bodies are unable to store extra protein, we must provide our system with protein throughout the day by eating a well-balanced diet. Protein plays an important role when it comes to burning fat, because it contains essential amino acids." Getting all of the essential amino acids you need in your daily diet requires you to meet your daily protein recommendation. In our basic nutrition classes we are taught that 10% - 35% of our daily calories should come from good clean protein sources. Protein has 4 calories per gram, an example of say a 2000-calorie a day diet as stated in the Dietary Guidelines in 2010, would convert to you needing between 50 to 175 grams of protein daily. And my belief is that on average a moderately sedate person needs about 1200-calories a day ( low cal is only good for a very short period of time - most people do not lose weight because they are not eating enough fuel or the wrong source of fuel)  and that would be about 30 to 105 grams per day.

So how do you know if you are getting that needed fuel?  Plan your meals, count your grams of protein by labels or by supplements to add in at least the minimum while consuming a good day of eating.  AND I seriously want you to eat a good balanced diet daily....proteins/carbs and healthy fats...and carbs from some grains and lots of veggies.  ( please note...some people do not tolerate grains well...so let's talk individually about this)

So to the point of this article..QUINOA ( Keen-Wah)!  What is it?  Check it out here !  "Quinoa is food of high protein quality and is typically regarded as an adequate source of all essential amino acids, including lysine and isoleucine. It provides a variety of antioxidant phytonutrients, including ferulic, coumaric, hydroxybenzoic, and vanillic acid. Antioxidant flavonoids including quercetin and kaempferol are also especially plentiful in quinoa. Anti-inflammatory polysaccharides in quinoa include arabinans and rhamnogalacturonans. Many members of the vitamin E tocopherol family are provided by quinoa, including important amounts of gamma-tocopherol. Quinoa is a very good source of manganese. It is also a good source of phosphorus, copper, magnesium, dietary fiber, folate, and zinc."  ( taken from the above referenced article)

WHAT is great about Quinoa?  Well... it tastes great!  It combines well with other flavor profiles.  It has a fantastic nutritional profile.  AND a little bit is very filling and healthy!  It has protein, healthy fats, carbs - full profile of Macronutrients, Micronutrients, Minerals Omega's, Aminos!  Check out more info on the nutrients!

And for some great ways to use it....from the Reader's Digest !   Try some, let me which is your favorite!  Mine - the Shrimp and Vegetable Fried Rice!

Well, it's about time for another Health History appointment!  So I must close...have an amazing blessed day and let me know in the comments section if you found this article helpful!  And if you too would like to have FREE Health History Consultation!

WHAT A DAY! LOVE TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

Well, it has been a long time since I posted...been very busy!  Blessed to have been able to spend a few days in the Nashville area helping out a friend!  Life is good when I can create my own schedule and time for things that matter most!

And today...well, I got all caught up on some training Modules... Did some taxes for a friend...and did my grocery shopping!  Dave went and I educated him on the Fooducate App.  Fun, fun!

But the best part was to be able to make a little difference in someone's life and health!  You know me, well, some of you do!  And I just find it so hard to watch someone pick up a product they think is healthy and good and not open my big mouth!  Luckily both beautiful women I met today were not taken aback by my boldness!  So shared some basic info, shared my blog and feel like I made a difference.  That's the best part of Health Coaching!

So also thinking about the subject for my next class at SNAP in Radcliff?  I am thinking maybe a discussion of what is GMO and why is it not something we need in our bodies.  What do you think?

I will be posting about that class soon!  In the mean time, thanks for stopping by!  Oh and for one young woman I spoke to today...check out this RELOAD, and let me know if your girls liked the taste?

And the other lovely woman I met....check out this article...Whey vs. Soy for Weight Loss.  And if you are needing some great protein...let me know!

TEST TODAY! WOW

Hi!  So it's been a few days!  I have been so busy and today all the studying and listening and lectures comes together!  You may know I am a student at Integrative Nutrition.  You can check it out here!  But today - is our first TEST!  And then the Health Coaching begins in practice!  So looking forward to that step...one step closer to becoming an Holistic Health Coach!

So you may ask why a health coach?  What's that all about?  Well the definition is not really simple but it is effective, for my purposes.  You see I let my health and the health of those I love and care about get down.  I chose to ignore my health while working full time, raising 2 amazing boys and being the primary caregiver to my Mother through her Alzheimer's Journey! I relied on the Medical Doctors to control my health and future and I did not do the things I knew to do for a very long time.  AND I had to wait until I bottomed in that area to create change in my life.  I had the benefit of many mentors on my health journey and an amazing array of products that supported me.  But not everyone has that opportunity or wants to even take a look.  I felt I needed to learn more and see how nutrition could play an even bigger role.  SO...now I am on that journey and I can not wait to share and mentor others.

Step one on that path....education!  So join me on April 7th at SNAP Fitness in Radcliff for a conversation about labels!  What's really in there and why is it important?  Check it out!

NOT A SECRET! IT'S AGELESS!

So I will be bold and say my age....57!  I am concerned with aging...are you?  What do you think about when I say Aging?  Lines, Wrinkles, Cremes, Potions?  Do you think of aging from the inside out or just the outside? Is there something you can do to age gracefully?  I know I am aging...we all are...years add up...but we can choose to Age Gracefully!

Here's some information from a physicians point of view!

Can You Age Better?

It is my SECRET WEAPON!  It can be yours too!

OH MY.....THAT'S WHAT'S IN THERE?

Do you read labels?  The ingredients are important...what do you look for?  The breakdown of carbs, sugars, fats, proteins....that's important too!  And the most important I think...SERVING SIZE!  When you buy a bag or box of something, do you look to see how much you should be eating in a serving?  Next time you eat a cold cereal for breakfast pour your normal bowl...then before you add milk, measure what's in there!  Is it a serving?  Or more than a serving?  Now add your milk, does the amount you add match a serving?  One of the most important things about changing your lifestyle in the journey of getting healthy or healthier is being aware!  JOIN ME if you are local!

WHAT IS DIABETES?

So I signed up for a new blog....Full Plate Living...nice site!  And they are diabetes specialists.  How did they know I was diabetic?  I am ..TYPE2!

I have spent several years working on getting mine under control.  Diet, exercise and working with a diabetes educator and of course my Juice...all made a big difference for me.  I was on 4 pills, and 2 shots a day of Byetta when I began this healthy journey.  Now just down to 1 pill twice a day, and hopefully that will change after my next blood tests.

I really liked how this blog addresses "what is diabetes?"  So I wanted to share their blog link ...enjoy the learning and let me know how I can help you begin a healthy journey of your own to work on improving your numbers.  It is important...you don't want the side affects of poor control.  I watch my Grandmother pass away from diabetes complications, my Aunt from complications and my Great Grandmother also.  So do your self a favor....check out this blog and call me!

Health is a vehicle, not a destination!

Health is a vehicle, not a destination!  Do you agree?  What do you see as health?  Good health?  Do you have it now?  Are you working on getting it? What does it look like?  Why do you want to be healthy?  How would your life change if you were healthy, and why do you think your not?  What steps are taking right now?

All those above are things someone said to me once!  When I was not in a healthy place in my life.  I thought I was healthy, or rather as healthy as I could be for my "age"!  But I soon realized my age had nothing to do with it.  But my attitude about health did!  I was just like many of you...if I take a pill and it makes me feel better...I am healthy!  Right?

Over the last 4 years I have learned so much about health.  I have learned that it is not about the pills, not about the scale, more about the fit of my clothes and the absence of pills!  I took 7 pills to fix all the health issues that I had....and I did seriously believe as long as my issues were in control with a pill, I was good!  Then came all those questions?

I began to eliminate things from my life...stress, or how I managed it!  Toxins...what did I slather all over my skin in the hopes of maintaining my looks!  Yes, weight, and a change in pants size!  But  I also changed my outlook about life, my relationships with family and friends, my relationship with God, my self satisfaction, my career, my passions!  And I can say now I am healthy!  Are you in that happy, healthy place?  If you are not, I would love to help direct some changes in your life that may make a huge difference.  Please allow me to serve you, allow me to be of service for you...just let me know how you see health!

Oh and remember...comments are always appreciated,

How was your last few days? Check out mine!

WOW, its been a few days since I added to this!  Let me just say that Monday started out just like any other Monday...talked to some new friends, sent some emails, went to the gym...Tuesday was my normal Tuesday too!  THEN Wednesday started out great, took some XALO Ageless Samples to a friend along with some Juice ( he has been having Back Pain forever...and finally agreed to try!)  and then I started for home! That's when I got a call that was horrifying...one of my great friends whose husband in in FL learning to be an RV mechanic...was robbed and shot in the head....he was extremely blessed and the 17 yr old Boy missed at point blank range and grazed his head...cracking his skull!  Not that that is not horrible enough, but the real scary part...he was SKYPING with his wife here when it happened!!!  She saw him fall over, heard the robber tell him he was going to shoot him, heard the shot and then saw all the blood!    Prayers flew all over town for him...and in 3 hrs we knew he was fine and she was preparing to fly to be with him.  SO, why do I tell you this story...well, all he asks for now is prayers for the young man who did this.  He was the 5th victim that day from this young man.  Please add this to your prayers today!

This is a young man with no direction, probably with no alternatives, probably with a large lack of focus and attention...do you agree?  I believe that all young men deserve a chance to live a life that is happy, blessed and loved.  Check out this video  Mom and Son Relationship for a look at developing a great  Mom and Son relationship...think about your sons, and how they grew up....then I ask that you too pray or give your blessings to this wayward young man.

On a brighter note...got to meet my new Little today!  I am a Big Sister and have been unmatched for almost a year....excited to begin another relationship with a young woman and hopefully make a difference in her life.  If you have a few hours extra a month...consider becoming a Big Sister or Big Brother!  You can learn all about it here...BBBSKY !  There are many kiddos waiting and you can really have an impact on a young life.  Maybe even one that would have changed the outcome of the young man mentioned above.  Just look into it!

We have moved....if you landed here we have a new site!                     www.imaginefit.biz/blog/               Come on over ...
